Elk City sophomore Josie McConnell is already carving out a reputation as a steady presence on the softball field, combining discipline, leadership and a deep respect for the game.

McConnell, who plays shortstop for the Elkettes, approaches the sport with a mindset shaped largely by her family. She credits her parents as her biggest inspiration, pointing to the daily sacrifices they make to support her athletic journey.

“My parents … never fail to make me feel supported or appreciated,” McConnell said. “They make daily sacrifices so I can go play the game I love.”

That foundation has helped her embrace both the physical and mental demands of softball, especially at one of the sport’s most challenging positions. As a shortstop, McConnell understands the responsibility that comes with being at the center of the infield.

“Shortstop is a privilege but it also carries pressure,” she said. “Your teammates rely on you to lead, rise up in hard situations, and to have fun doing it.”

Her approach at the plate reflects that same balance of confidence and control. McConnell describes her hitting philosophy as “saggressive” — a blend of selective patience and decisive action.

“Once I see my pitch, I’m swinging the bat,” she said. “I try to not allow the pitcher to have the upper hand in my at bat.”

Off the field, McConnell carries that discipline into the classroom. Math stands out as her favorite subject because of its structure and problem-solving clarity. She also credits former teacher Sheila Butler for leaving a lasting impact during her middle school years.

“She always made sure you knew the material, but she knew how to add a little comic relief and a good attitude to the classroom,” McConnell said.

Within the Elk City program, McConnell values culture just as much as competition. She takes pride in helping set an example for younger players and shaping what it means to represent the Elkettes.

“I love getting to grow our program’s culture as well as showing younger players … the way an Elkette softball player should act on and off the field,” she said.

That culture is reinforced through shared experiences, even when circumstances are less than ideal. During a recent team camp in Silo, Oklahoma, rain forced the team indoors for nearly two days. Rather than dwell on missed opportunities, the players bonded through games and time together.

“We played games and made the best of our free time,” McConnell said.

She also points to teammates who help define the team’s energy. Luci O’Hara brings consistent positivity and leadership, while Blakely Ball is known for relentless effort — often finishing games with the dirtiest uniform after diving plays and aggressive base running.

Through it all, McConnell has embraced one of softball’s simplest but most important unwritten rules: respect the game.

“You always show respect to the game or the game will disrespect you,” she said. “If you don’t hustle, show sportsmanship, and stay humble, the game will find a way to punish you.”

It’s a lesson that extends beyond the field. McConnell said athletics has taught her to maintain a positive attitude in difficult situations — a mindset she plans to carry with her long after her playing days.
