Elk City’s Kaidynce Cordell-Athlete Spotlight

For Elk City High School junior Kaidynce Cordell, golf is more than a varsity sport. It is a daily lesson in patience, perseverance and believing in the value of hard work.

Cordell plays varsity golf for the Elks and represented the team as the third bag last season. Her dedication paid off when she qualified for the state tournament, an achievement that remains one of the proudest moments of her athletic career.

“Qualifying for state in golf was a moment that showed me that all the hard work, practice and time I had put into the sport was worth it,” Cordell said. “More than the accomplishment itself, I’m proud of the person golf has helped me become and the memories I’ve made with my teammates along the way.”

Golf’s individual nature can make every shot feel important, but Cordell has learned to handle both success and setbacks with a steady mindset. The sport has taught her that improvement does not happen overnight and that mistakes can become valuable opportunities to grow.

“Golf has made me a better person by teaching me patience, perseverance and how to stay positive even when things don’t go as planned,” Cordell said. “It has taught me that mistakes are part of learning and that success comes from continuing to work hard and never giving up.”

That approach is rooted in the example set by her family. Cordell said her parents are her greatest inspirations because of their work ethic, encouragement and ability to make her feel comfortable being herself.

“They are both incredibly hardworking and never complain,” she said. “Whenever they do something, they give it 115 percent.”

Cordell also credits teammate Erin Womack for making a lasting impression. Womack’s faith, humor and work ethic have helped create an environment where teammates can compete, improve and enjoy their time together.

“She is the kind of player and teammate who always pushes others to be better while still making everyone laugh,” Cordell said.

Away from the course, Cordell is grateful for the influence of Mrs. Sutton, a teacher she has had during multiple stages of her education. Cordell describes Sutton as a second mom whose kindness, support and encouragement have stayed with her.

As she continues her high school golf career, Cordell carries simple but meaningful advice: do not expect opportunities to be handed to you. Instead, work for what you want, ask for help when needed and take pride in the accomplishments earned through personal effort.

Cordell also gives thanks to Jesus, her parents and her siblings for the support that has helped shape her journey.
