When the lights come on and the Elks take the field, the Elk City High School cheer squad wants its presence to be felt far beyond the sideline.
Entering her fifth season as head coach, Brycee Bonner and assistant coach Nyla Ball are guiding a group built around enthusiasm, accountability and a commitment to representing Elk City with class. The squad’s goals extend beyond sharp motions, crowd-leading chants and clean stunts. This season is about growing together, strengthening relationships and creating the type of positive environment that can energize an entire school.
“Our focus this season is growth, both as athletes and as individuals,” Bonner said. “We are committed to building strong relationships within our team because we know trust, accountability, and unity are the foundation of success.”
Senior leadership will be an important piece of that foundation, beginning with stunt captain Hazel Claborn. Returning for her second year in the role, Claborn has earned the confidence of her coaches and teammates through a steady approach, strong work ethic and willingness to invest in everyone around her.
“She leads with confidence, encourages those around her, and is always willing to help every member of the team succeed,” Bonner said. “She genuinely cares about each teammate.”
Sophomore Khloe Harrison also steps into a major responsibility as the team’s dance captain. Though one of the younger leaders on the squad, Harrison brings energy and confidence to the position. Her enthusiasm for improvement has made an impression in practices and performances, while her example encourages teammates to keep raising their standards.
Harley Anderson is another cheerleader Bonner sees becoming a greater asset to the program. Anderson brings a team-first mentality, accepting whatever role is needed and approaching practices with positivity and a desire to improve. That coachability and dependable attitude have helped establish her as an emerging leader.
Not every leader needs to be the loudest, and Shelby Copeland proves that through her daily actions. Copeland gives consistent effort while also making sure newer teammates feel included and valued. Her kindness, selflessness and quiet confidence help create the connected culture Elk City hopes to build.
The roster also includes Aaliyah Arvizu, Norma Cupp, Rylee James, Lauren Johnson, Maylee Mason, Katelyn Perez, Lillian Rippetoe and Laiyla Urbina.
Together, the Elks are preparing to lead with school pride and support. Whether they are performing under Friday night lights or encouraging classmates throughout the year, Elk City’s cheer squad plans to bring energy, excellence and unity to every opportunity.
