Elk City’s Madilynn Long-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Paul Jones Drug

Madilynn Long has spent the past three years building a golf career defined by steady improvement, meaningful relationships and a willingness to embrace new challenges. The Elk City High School senior has created memorable moments on the course while learning lessons that will continue to guide her beyond graduation. Long competes in high school golf and said one of her proudest accomplishments has been qualifying for the state tournament in three consecutive seasons. She also points to a personal-best round as a milestone she will always remember. “The memory I’m most proud of is going to state for 3 years in a row and breaking my personal record during a high school golf tournament with an 83,” Long said. While golf is often an individual competition, Long values the support system around her. Her parents have played a central role in her development, not only by attending tournaments but also by encouraging her through the highs and lows of the game. “The people who inspire me are my parents,” Long said. “They show up and support me at every tournament no matter what and encourage me to always do my best. My dad is who I’ve learned all my golf game from, I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.” Long said golf has also pushed her to become more confident outside of her comfort zone. “What golf has taught me to become a better person is to get out of my comfort zone and to not be afraid to try new things,” Long said. That mindset applies to the patience required in a sport where one tough hole can change the tone of a round. Long carries advice that helps her reset and stay focused rather than allowing frustration to take over. “The best advice someone has given me is don’t let one bad hole ruin your whole round,” Long said. “Golf can’t be perfect and you’re going to have bad shots, the only thing that matters is to just have fun.” She also credits her second grade teacher, Mrs. Simon, for teaching her determination. “She has taught me to never give up and keep pushing forward,” Long said. For Long, a major part of the golf experience has been sharing it with teammate Anna. “The teammate that has left the biggest impression on me would be Anna,” Long said. “She is always up for anything at any time. During golf season, we’re always right next to each other by helping our golf game or simply just enjoying each other’s company. She has and will always be my golf partner.” Long thanked her parents, friends and coaches “that have been supportive since day one and shaped me who I am today.”
