As Elk City moves into the second half of its fastpitch softball season, the Elkettes continue to lean on a veteran core, senior leadership and a team-first approach.

After last season’s 31-4 campaign, Elk City returned several experienced players and entered the year with high expectations. The season, however, brought an early challenge when the Elkettes lost their starting pitcher to a season-ending injury.

“The biggest adversity for us this year is losing our starting pitcher to a season-ending injury,” head coach Kaleb Murray said. “We prepared all summer and adapted to her play style, then have had to change midyear.”

The loss forced Elk City to make adjustments, but Murray believes the team has responded by becoming more connected and learning how to rely on one another.

“I think it’s a great preparation for these girls for life in the way that everything is not what you plan it to be and you never know when it will be your time to shine,” Murray said. “We have really had to rely on ourselves in other ways this year and play a lot of team softball.”

One player who has stepped into a larger role is freshman pitcher Kynlee Suter. Murray said Suter has provided important innings in the circle while taking on significant responsibility early in her high school career.

“I don’t really think anyone has necessarily surprised me too much this year,” Murray said. “We really are getting close to what I expected from everyone in our lineup. I will say we have gotten really solid innings from our freshman pitcher Kynlee Suter, who has had to take on a major role this year.”

The Elkettes have also received valuable leadership from their senior group. Murray said Ragan Hulen, Blakely Ball and Luci O’Hara have accepted greater responsibility as offensive leaders while setting an example for younger teammates on and off the field.

Ball remains one of Elk City’s most dynamic athletes. The left-handed hitter has consistently created pressure on opposing defenses with her speed and on-base ability, while her athleticism makes her a major asset in the outfield.

Lynlee Pogue has also been a consistent force for the Elkettes. A tough out at the plate, Pogue combines contact ability and speed with the range to make plays across the outfield.

“Lynlee Pogue is another one that has been very consistent and tough to get out all year and flies in the outfield,” Murray said.

As the season continues, Elk City’s goals remain unchanged. With Suter handling an expanded role in the circle and the senior class providing stability, the Elkettes are determined to keep competing, adapt to every challenge and play their best softball when it matters most.
