Energy, enthusiasm, and dedication — three words that perfectly describe Elk City senior Nevaeh Thompson, whose presence on the mat brings an undeniable spark to the Elkettes cheer squad. “My personal goals this season are to make it to state, continue to improve on my tumbling, and stay positive,” Thompson said. That mindset has guided her through countless practices and performances, fueling her drive to make the most of her final year in brown and white.

Team spirit has been at an all-time high this season, something Thompson says has made a noticeable difference. “The team morale has been the best it’s ever been — very positive and uplifting!” she said. The Elkettes’ encouraging atmosphere has helped strengthen bonds and push each other to new heights.

According to Thompson, that positivity has also helped the team adapt more easily when faced with change. “The biggest improvement I’ve seen from the team so far is becoming more comfortable with change and flexibility,” she said. “We’ve kept learning new things while overcoming frustrations with teamwork. We achieve this with extra practices, communication, and open minds.”

When it comes to the squad’s strengths, Thompson says open-mindedness sets them apart. “Our biggest strength right now is being open-minded to new ideas, stunts, formations, and cheers,” she said. “We’re always willing to try something new.”

A versatile athlete, Thompson embraces her multiple roles on the mat. “I’m a tumbler, usually a main base but able to be backspot or side base while keeping a positive attitude and smiling,” she said. She’s learned that mental preparation is just as important as physical endurance. “I go to bed early the night before and drink plenty of water, then right before the performance I focus on breathing,” Thompson explained.

Her favorite part of cheering, though, is stepping onto the field and soaking it all in. “My mindset when I step on the mat or field is that I’m here to have a good time and be a part of a team I’m extremely proud of!”

After high school, Thompson plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University and study dentistry. Until then, she’s focused on leaving a legacy defined by joy and determination. “I want to be remembered as the person who was happy, positive, and determined in every activity,” she said with a smile.
