Not every player looks at a challenge and leans in—but Elk City’s Tucker Garza does. The senior running back and outside linebacker thrives under pressure and sees every snap as an opportunity to prove something. “I’m the best fit for this challenge and being a better player than the man across from me,” Garza said. That competitive mindset is what fuels one of Elk City’s most explosive and consistent performers.

Garza has big goals for his senior campaign. “I want to have 2,000 all-purpose yards this senior season,” he said. Those numbers don’t just happen by chance. It’s been a grind all summer long. “Coming out of our off days to get more work and improve at the field,” Garza said of his offseason work ethic.

The team’s edge, he believes, comes down to heart. “Our grit and the want to be the best,” he said simply. That inner fire shows up at practice, in meetings, and especially in the fourth quarter. The team has clear goals and a clear plan. “Win the division and compete for a state title,” Garza said. “We work to achieve them by finishing through sprints, holding each other accountable, and good body language.”

He points to the senior class as a major reason for the program’s momentum. “Our senior leaders—some have started for a few years and some are just now coming into their role—but they all make an impact on the team’s morale,” he said.

As a versatile weapon on both sides of the ball, Garza focuses on the details. “Alignment before the snap and stunts once the ball is snapped,” he said of his pre-play reads. Preparation is a full-time responsibility. “I stretch every night, make sure I consume a lot of water and sodium, and of course get a good home cooked meal before every game,” he said.

Through it all, he’s hoping to leave behind more than stats. “Thought of as one of the best athletes to come through Elk City, but hopefully remembered for my character and hard work,” he said.

Still, he knows how to keep things fun. “We have a lot of comedians even if it’s not the right timing,” he laughed.

His favorite game? “Playing my heart out against Altus to show the community what I worked so hard on all summer long.” His walkout song? “‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ by Metallica.” Enough said.
