The Elk City Elkettes softball team places a high emphasis on family. Kenedee “Lou” Wyatt, senior catcher for the Elkettes, believes that it is that strong feeling of family and unity that is key to her team’s success, “My favorite thing about being a part of this team is having all my friends and family so close. Being a part of this team is not only fun, but it also makes softball something I look forward to each day. Being so close to my teammates and the fact that we all trust one another just makes us that much more successful.”
The Elkettes have certainly shared a lot of success during Wyatt’s time there. Last year, she and her teammates accumulated an impressive 31-5 record for the season. They also took Elk City to its first state tournament in over 20 years.
It’s a common maxim in sports that success breeds success, and after getting a taste of winning, Lou and her teammates are hungry for more, “First and foremost, I am looking forward to having one more successful season with all of my friends. However, after making it to state for the first time, we are looking to get back again, and we really believe we can make it farther this year.”
Wyatt, who was named All-District as a catcher last season, put in the work during the offseason that she hopes will allow her and her teammates to take that next step. “I worked on my weakness from last season, particularly fixing some holes in my offensive game. But defense is important, too. I see myself as a leader. Not only am I a senior, but behind the plate I’m in control, so I have to stay on top of my game.”
When asked about her love of the game, Lou gave a shout out to her support group, “I owe a lot to my friends and family. I grew up around sports, and it’s always been a huge part of my life. My dad supports me in all that I do, so that I’m able to do what I love!”
When not on the diamond, Kenedee is highly involved in Elk City’s school culture. She is a member of Student Council, of Interact, and of KEY Club. She is also a member of the prestigious National Honors Society. Following graduation next spring Wyatt plans to attend OSU, where she would like major in Nutritional Science and Pre-Med.
