Parents make an impact on the lives of their children in a lot of ways. While in a lot of cases it is helping provide for them or helping them learn a life lesson, other times it is just about being present. That is something that Meggan Church tries to do for her kids because that is what she knew as a student.
“I’ve always felt it important to be present and supportive,” Church said. “I can’t tell you how many games I won as a basketball player in the 90’s. But I can for sure tell you that my parents were at nearly every game and supported me as much as they could.”
Meggan is the mother of three. Casady is a 2018 graduate of Elk City High School and a 2022 graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University and she will be getting married in May. Cooper graduated from Elk City in 2023 and he is majoring in Manufacturing Engineering Technology at SWOSU. At Elk City, he was active in basketball, baseball, and band. Her youngest, Collin, is in his senior year at Elk City. He has played football, basketball, and baseball throughout high school.
As a parent, Church knows that she has a big responsibility in raising her kid and helping them get ready for life.
“I want to help them to realize that the life lessons they are experiencing is preparing them for something larger in life,” she said. “Their whole life will be based around a team of some sort, whether it be a marriage, parenting, or a job. I am hoping the successes or difficulties they experience in a team-setting as a high school athlete will equip them for those larger life experiences.”
Meggan has tried to be as involved with her kids’ sports as much as possible because she knows that parental involvement is important to the team’s success.
“I’ve always been a member and involved in the booster clubs of the sport or activity that my kid is participating in. Without parents and the volunteers to help run the booster clubs, the sports and extra curricular activities would not be as successful,” she said.
