Kazlyn Ulrich – Elk City Girls Basketball
“My biggest motivation is my potential. I know what I can do and achieve, so it pushes me to do the best I can in everything I do,” says Elk City High School junior Kazlyn Ulrich. That drive for self-improvement fuels her passion on the court and beyond as she represents Elk City in basketball, softball, and track.
In basketball, Kazlyn is a powerhouse at center/forward, a role that demands physical readiness and resilience, qualities she’s honed through dedication. “It has taken lots of grit and determination to be successful in my sports. Whether it’s waking up at 5:30 am to go to the gym or eating a different diet than everyone around me so I can be physically ready to perform my best,” she shares. This commitment has carried her through numerous injuries, including one she’s still working to overcome. Even when sidelined, Kazlyn’s positivity remains constant. “I’ve had to be mentally strong and able to cheer on my teammates from the sidelines, even though I want to be out there with them so badly.”
Kazlyn’s role models are her teammates, especially upperclassmen Abby Brown and Ella Sottile. “They always push themselves in every practice and workout, which influenced me to always do the same.” Their influence has taught her the importance of effort, an approach she applies across sports and academics alike. Kazlyn stays involved in NHS, Student Council, FCA, and even holds a leadership role within FCA.
Though Kazlyn has achieved much in her athletic career, one standout moment remains close to her heart. “The highlight moment of my career was when we made it to the area in basketball. Something no one expected of us, which made it even more amazing to get to do,” she says. Her pride in that accomplishment and the underdog spirit that drove her team forward continue to inspire her on and off the court.
Kazlyn’s positive influence extends beyond sports. In the classroom, Mrs. Sutton has been a major inspiration since kindergarten. “She was always smiling and always brought a smile to my face even on the bad days. She always encouraged me and challenged me in school.”
Looking forward, Kazlyn’s goals are both ambitious and well-aligned with her determination. “My plans are to go to college somewhere and eventually go to medical school for either dermatology or plastic surgery.”
Ultimately, for Kazlyn, representing Elk City is about more than athletic achievement. “Representing my school while playing means being the one to stay positive. I like to always be the one cheering or hustling even when we’re not playing our best or losing at that moment.”
