Aubrie Pogue is a freshman at Elk City and pitches for the Elkette softball team. As Pogue continues her first year competing at the high school level she has been enjoying her season and adapting to the new level of competition. Pogue knows that, as softball is a team sport, it is necessary for players to work together. There are certain characteristics that Pogue looks for in herself and her teammates.

“Qualities that make someone a good leader are being confident in your teammates,” Pogue said. “Someone who wants to listen, is unselfish, is willing to put the team first, and is always encouraging.”

One person that Pogue finds inspiring is former All American and Olympic pitcher Jennie Finch. Pouge looks as Finch as the type of player and person she wants to be.

“Jennie Finch is my role model because not only does she have great sportsmanship but she is a great pitcher and one of the best softball players of all time,” Pogue said.

Softball has been a staple in Pogue’s life and she has been playing the sport ever since she could hold a bat. She loves the competition that comes with the game.

“I first started playing softball when I was four and my favorite part of the game is competing,” Pogue said. “I don’t like to lose.”

Pogue said her favorite memory from this season was beating Tuttle – a perennial state contender – in a home game. 

As the season nears its close Pogue reflected on how the season had gone through September.

“I think we have had a very successful year so far and I think we have the most challenging district to play in,” Pogue said. “But our goal is to make the state tournament.”

When asked what she has learned after her first year competing at the high school level Pogue had this to say:

“Hard work pays off, always have good sportsmanship, and accept that mistakes happen. It isn’t about making mistakes, it’s about how you handle them that matters.”
