Senior Quinn Brewer closes out his Elk City High School tennis career chasing both results and memories in his final season. “My personal goal this season is not only to play the best I can but also enjoy every last moment of high-school tennis,” Brewer said.
The Fightin’ Elks carry high energy into every match. “The team morale is great,” he said. “Everyone is ready to go and compete.” That commitment shows up beyond scheduled practices. “The biggest team improvement is that everyone is willing to put in that extra time outside of practice to keep improving,” Brewer said.
State glory fuels their drive. “Our team wants to win state again,” he said. “We want to prove we aren’t inferior to private schools. We are practicing hard inside and outside of practice.” Versatility gives them an edge. “I think the team’s biggest strength is that we all have different playing styles,” Brewer said. “That way we are never surprised when we go up against any playing style.”
Long matches demand smart preparation. “Hydration is the most importantly thing,” he said. “During those long matches, you lose a lot of water, which causes cramps. You must stay hydrated.” Competition consumes his focus at first serve. “When I step on the court, all I’m thinking about is how I can win this match,” he said. “What I need to do to beat my opponent.”
Brewer hopes his work ethic lingers longest. “I want to be remembered as the guy who showed that hard work is all you need to be great,” he said. Effort, not talent, built their program. “I want outsiders to know that our team is not naturally gifted at tennis,” he said. “It took hours of hard work to get to where we are.”
A championship moment still stands tallest. “My favorite memory was finding out our team won the Oklahoma 4A team state championship,” he said. “It felt like all the hard work put I had finally paid off.” His resume speaks volumes. “My high-school record is 73 wins and 8 losses,” he said. “I’m an E-sports state champion and am in National Honor Society. After high school, I plan on attending SWOSU to get a degree in sports medicine.”
