Elk City’s – Bridgette Shelton – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Paul Jones Drug

In every school, there are teachers whose classrooms seem to hum with energy and curiosity, places where students feel seen, challenged, and inspired. At Elk City High School in Elk City, Oklahoma, one of those teachers is Bridgette Shelton, who has spent 11 years helping juniors and seniors strengthen their skills in English 3, English 3 Honors, and Mystery & True Crime Literature while discovering confidence in their own potential.

Her education journey didn’t start with books; it started on the sidelines in Texas, where she worked as an athletic trainer and built student trainer programs in districts like Woodville ISD and Robinson ISD. She discovered that the part she loved most was teaching her student trainers and injured athletes about their injuries and rehabilitation.

“I realized I loved the teaching part most of all.”

That realization pulled her from the fieldhouse to the classroom, where serving others through education felt like a natural extension of who she was. Over time, the relationships she built with students and colleagues turned Elk City High School into a second family.

To her students, Mrs. Shelton is more than an English teacher. She is a listener, a motivator, and sometimes a curious partner as they pick apart a mystery or true crime narrative together, always pushing them to think more deeply and express themselves more clearly.

“Watching students realize how much potential they have, that’s the best part. It never gets old.”

Her teaching philosophy rests on simple but powerful advice that has shaped her approach in and out of the classroom.

“The best way to lead is to be a servant.”

Outside of school, Bridgette is a devoted daughter, sister, and proud aunt to Eli, Joel, Libby, and Camryn, and time with family is one of her greatest joys. When she is not planning lessons or grading essays, she might be gardening with her parents, reading, crocheting, singing, or getting drawn into another true crime documentary or podcast.

“Find what you love and do it well, and don’t hide your light.”
