Determination and grit are trademarks of Elk City senior wrestler Jason “Sonny” Holladay, a 5’11” multi-sport athlete who’s racked up close to 80 career wins on the mat. A one-time state qualifier, Sonny knows exactly what he wants in his final season. “My personal goal this season is placing in the state tournament,” he said. It’s a goal he’s been chasing since the early days of his wrestling career, and one that fuels his drive every day in the gym.

Team energy has been a defining factor for the Elks this year, and Sonny can feel it. “I think the team’s morale has been full of excitement and energy,” he said. That enthusiasm has translated into better practices and stronger performances across the board. “The biggest improvement with our team has been the energy during the practices,” he added, emphasizing how hard work behind the scenes builds success on the mat.

The team’s shared ambition is clear. “Our team goals are being able to make it to dual state and working to achieve that is us working hard in practices every day,” Sonny explained. With a roster of dedicated wrestlers and coaches who push them to new limits, the Elks are aiming high. “I think our team’s biggest strength right now is our coaches pushing us to be our best,” he said.

As a senior, Sonny takes his leadership role seriously. “My role as a senior is to be a leader for all my teammates and make sure they stay on their right minds for this season,” he said. His leadership extends beyond words—it’s seen in the way he competes and prepares.

Every match requires precision and awareness. “When reading an opponent, I look for speed and technique,” Sonny explained. His preparation before stepping onto the mat is just as focused. “I prepare myself physically for my matches by eating the right foods before and in between matches and staying hydrated,” he said.

That discipline supports a fierce mindset. “My mindset when stepping on the mat is to win and to push through every period,” Sonny shared.

When it comes to legacy, his goal is simple and bold: “I want my legacy at Elk City to be state champion.”

Off the mat, he stays busy with baseball, cross country, and FFA, and plans to “go straight into work unless I get a decent scholarship.” Whether competing or leading, Sonny Holladay continues to represent Elk City with toughness, pride, and heart.
