For Elk City High School senior Ragan Hulen, softball is built on effort, preparation and the people who make each season meaningful. A third baseman, Hulen embraces a position that demands quick decisions and even quicker reactions.

“I play 3rd base. The most difficult aspect to adjust to at third base has been the short amount of reaction time.”

That challenge fits Hulen’s approach to the sport. She believes the game’s most important unwritten rule is simple: “The best unwritten rule in softball is to try your best and give full effort on every play for your team.”-

At the plate, Hulen keeps her mindset focused one pitch at a time.

“My process at the plate is to take it pitch by pitch and approach early.”

Hulen is part of Elk City’s softball program and is listed as an infielder on the team roster. But for her, being on a team means more than playing a position or contributing on game day.maxpreps

“I enjoy being a member of the team because my teammates are now my closest friends and I enjoy being surrounded by great people.”

She especially appreciates teammates who work to improve even after practice ends.

“I love that so many of my teammates strive to become the best version of themselves and put in work outside of practice.”

Hulen said Ona Rakestraw brings energy to the group as its most vocal teammate and is also known for having the dirtiest uniform after games. Alivia Casas, meanwhile, keeps the team laughing. Hulen also credits former teammate Emily Lowrance for making a lasting impact through her example.

“The teammate that has left the biggest impression on me is Emily Lowrance. She set a positive and kind example to every underclassman.”

Away from softball, Hulen enjoys shopping, walking, working out and participating in community service. She is involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Senior Class Committee, Interact Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Her favorite subject is math, while Mr. Jim Taylor stands out as a teacher and coach who has influenced her. “He is a great man and is a great example of God’s teachings.”

Hulen draws inspiration from her great-grandparents and carries their support with her.

“My great grandparents inspire me the most. They have always believed in me and supported me throughout my entire life, they are incredible role models.”
